Project Review: The Hubble Cantata – A Live Virtual Reality Performance

The Hubble Cantata – A Live Virtual Reality Performance

What Is The Project About?

The Hubble Cantata is an innovative merge of live music, science, and technology. Essentially the projects aim is to provide people a journey through the many spectacular pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope through virtual reality, while enhancing their experience with a live performance of classical musicians and singers that pays homage to the wonders of space….and they want to do it for FREE!

What They Are Doing Right!

  • Firstly, this idea is brilliant!!
    • I love the idea of a guided tour of space paired with spectacular music to make the journey even more epic.
  • The experience will be FREE!!!
    • The creators of this project want it to be for everyone to experience and enjoy much like any museum exhibit. This is great because it really adds value to backing the project.
  • Their graphics are amazing!
    • Their VR people have done a really good job of taking the pictures provided by Hubble and building a world out of them.

What They Are Doing Wrong!

  • Words, Words, Words!
    • Their project page starts off pretty well, but then gets very wordy as they go into explanations and talk far to much about the team working on the project.
    • Fix: I recommend that the creators clean up their project page a bit. Turn words into bullet points and the whole thing becomes much more digestible for potential backers.
  • No Links!
    • Neither on their project page or in their bio are any links to social media pages or a website.
    • Fix: If their project, company/organization, or creator’s have social media accounts, Use Them!! It also helps to have a website for people who want to find out more, but this is often too large of a project and can have very little sharibility. However, having a social media presence is crucial to successful funding. Simply adding on a few Twitter and Facebook accounts should be no problem but could drastically increase their chances of success.

(Disclaimer: Improvements can always be made. I make my critiques solely for pointing out where I believe improvements can be made. I intend to improve not insult.)

What I love about this project

    • I cannot stress this enough, the fact that they want this to be open to the public is a huge selling point for me! It really shows me the dedication the team has to making this project come to life and shows me that their goal is knowledge and joy instead of profit, which is a wonderful thing.
  • This is a truly inventive idea.
    • I have never heard of this being done before but now that I know about it, it seems like this should have become a thing long idea.

hubble 3

  • Will the tour and music be available on DVD in the future?
    • For those of us who may not be able to make the exhibit I would love to bring a piece of it into my home and store it proudly on my shelf.
  • Will people be able to experience this on their own VR equipment at any time?
    • With or without the music, perhaps when the exhibit is over or offering it to those out of the U.S.
  • Where will this exhibit be touring?
    • I would really like to get a general idea of where people might get to experience this.
  • Could this be done through YouTube Live?
    • Making it available to everyone while keeping the integrity of the live performances might be something to consider.
    • This could be done from either the VR perspective or multiple cuts showing the musicians, singers, people experiencing the exhibit, and the VR.

The Hubble Cantata has $2,512 pledged of a $35,000 goal, but still has a whole 28 days to go. I myself have backed the project to show my support. I hope to see them fully funded soon and hope that I’ll be lucky enough to attend one of their events.

Update: Eat-Purr-Love. Ohio’s first Cat Cafe!

Hello again, I back with a few updates and Ideas from Eat∙Purr∙Love (Central OH’s first & one-of-a-kind) Cat Cafe!. I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Chrissy Kuras, the project creator and of course cat lover, who answered a few of the questions I address in my last blog post. So Lets get down to business.

cat 1.jpg

  • Q: How many people are allowed in the cafe at a time?
    • A: There will be no more than 15 guests at a time
      • Eat-Purr-Love Really wants to focus on an enjoyable and intimate experience between its guests and their feline friends.
  • Q: What exactly is the hourly fee?
    • A: $10.00 / hour.
      • This was honestly higher than I expected. However, After finding out that there will only be 15 people at a time, this price becomes much more reasonable.
  • Q: How many cats?
    • A: They will have 8-10 cats.
  •  Q: What is the adoption process?
    • According to Chrissy Kuras, the Adoptable cats will come from the Capital Area Humane Society. They have an application process but typically not a waiting period so most times, cats can go home the same day.
  • Q: Where do they keep the litter boxes?
    • A: To quote Chrissy Kuras exactly, “the litter boxes will be in a separate area from the guests. That area will also serve as a “break room” for the cats if they need a break from us humans ooohing and awwwing over them :)”
      • This is a very practical idea for both the cats and the humans alike.
  • Q: Will there be lint rollers for sale?
    • A: …..Still waiting on an answer, but you might want to bring one yourself….

With the Questions and Answers out of the way I want to address some brilliant Ideas I have both heard from others and come up with. Interested?

Eat-Purr-Love. Ohio’s first Cat Cafe!

cat 1

This week I want to talk about a wonderful Kickstarter campaign, “Eat∙Purr∙Love (Central OH’s first & one-of-a-kind) Cat Cafe!“. Let’s get down to it.

What The Heck Is A Cat Cafe?

A Cat Cafe, or a “Catfe” as many refer to it is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a cafe…but with cats. The trend started in the international birthplace for weird things, (no not Tim Burton’s imagination), I’m talking about Japan.

After spreading all over Japan, Catfes naturally immigrated to America’s home for weird but brilliant ideas, California and New York. And now finally one will be making its way to Columbus Ohio.

Here are a few fun facts about this particular Catfe to get you acquainted with the general idea.

What Eat-Purr-Love Does.

  • All cats will be completely adoptable
  • You can do yoga with cats (sounds tricky)
  • You can paint with cats (what could go wrong)
  • You can buy cat inspired art from local artists…who own cats
  • There will be plenty of kids activities
  • And there will even be Singles Mixers, for single people who love cats to meet other single people who love cats. (This is with out a doubt one of the most necessary ideas I have ever heard)
  • Oh, and there will be coffee and pastries too.

So How Does It Work?

This is a valid question. After all most Americans have never been in or even heard of a Catfe. Here is the gist of the operation.

  • You will want to make a reservation.
    • They can only have so many people and this isn’t a place for people to just pop in and out of. If your going there, your going there to enjoy your time…which means there will be a line.
  • You will sign a waiver.
    • Cats are animals, thereby there is a risk of allergy or, in the case of an unwanted lower belly scratch, a few claw marks.
  • Review of rules.
    • Basically, be nice to the kitties.
  • Pay an hourly fee.
    • How Eat-Purr-Love has not released just how much this will be, but my guess would be somewhere between $1-$7.
  • KITTIES!!!!!!
    • This is the part where you enjoy being surrounded by cats that want your love

cat 3.jpeg

Reasons I’m Going To Try This.

  1. KITTIES!!!!!
  2. It helps support the animal shelters and helps find these cats the loving homes they deserve.
  3. I have a laser pointer I’m not using, and I haven’t created any mayhem in a while.
  4. Cats have in fact been a proven method of relieving stress.
  5. KITTIES!!!

In truth me and my wife love this idea. We already have a cat of our own and don’t plan to adopt, but we have been wanting a Catfe to come to Ohio since the day we heard of their existence.

Questions I Would Like Answered.

Even with all the information given on the Kickstarter campaign page, I still have a few questions that I would really like answered.

  • What exactly is the hourly fee?
  • How many people are allowed in the cafe at a time?
  • Is there a maximum amount of time you can spend?
  • What is the adoption process?
    • Can I walk out with one that day or is there a waiting period?
  • Where do they keep the litter boxes?
    • This is a legitimate question for woman who may be pregnant.
  • Will they be selling lint rollers?

I have backed the project myself and hope fully that they reach their funding goal. They currently have $6,829 pledged of a $8,900 goal with only 5 days left in their campaign.

If you would like to support their project here is a link to their Kickstarter page:

This post was brought to you in part by my cat, Holly Jolly Christmas Pants, or Holly for short. Who did a very good of making this take twice as long as it should have but also twice as ADORABLE!!!

So what do you think of this project? Have you ever been to a Catfe, or even heard of them? And would you ever go?
